We believe that effective strategy is based on building and mobilizing capabilities in pursuit of a common purpose, rooted in the value that the organization creates for society. Living the values and principles of the organization depends not only on clear strategies for action, but on the structures, systems and human capabilities that underpin day-to-day decision making. From defining purpose and values through to building mechanisms for ethical decision making, we work with our clients to shape the critical components of the ethical organization.
From defining purpose and values through to building mechanisms for ethical decision making, we understand how to build the structures and systems that underpin the ability of an organization to act ethically and responsibly.
Building the ethical organization depends first on articulating a common, unifying purpose. Developing and embedding a strong Ethical Purpose involves asking not “what does my organization do?”, but “what is my organization for?”. Through an honest appraisal of the value the company produces for society, leaders can establish ethical purpose as the foundation of an organization’s social contract and its licence to operate.
We work with our clients to define a strong and sustainable purpose, and to develop the capabilities, structures and systems that enable the organization to act in its pursuit. We believe that acting ethically depends on every facet of a company’s operations, from the way it incentivises and compensates its people through to the way it deals with failure.
Through maturity analysis targeted at the specific areas that we know are critical in ensuring an organization acts ethically and responsibly, we pinpoint areas for intervention and action. We draw on our experience building ethical organizations, and on our extensive network of leading experts, to give leadership teams a clear roadmap for transformation. We work alongside our clients throughout the change journey, ensuring that positive intent is matched with concrete action at every step, embedding ethics, values and principles into business-as-usual.
For the board and CEO of a global retail and investment bank with operations in 100+ countries, a Principia-led engagement laid the foundations for a transformation program focused on ethical purpose. A mass participation exercise across the global firm asked its people to define and articulate the core purpose of the bank, providing a clearly-articulated foundation for leaders’ efforts to embed greater responsibility and more effective decision making. On the basis of renewed ethical purpose, a major program of strategic transformation was rolled out across the bank’s 300,000 employees, improving conduct, retention and client satisfaction.
